THE FLOWERS OF SREBRENICA

If stories are not told, what is the toll?

LegalAliens Theatre in co-production with Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR, in association with MESS Festival, presents a bold theatrical reimagining of Aidan Hehir’s illustrated novel, blending physical theatre, devising, and animated projections.

Featuring artists from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Ireland and Ukraine, the show follows Aidan along his recent journey from Sarajevo to the site of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, guided by Mustafa, a Bosnian war veteran turned tour guide.

Arriving as a confident expert on the Balkans, he soon finds his assumptions challenged. As the heat becomes suffocating and the voices of the victims echo in his head, what begins as an ironic road trip shifts into a stark reckoning with human connection and the fragility of civilisation.

The dramaturgy is framed by a chorus of women storytellers, survivors and witnesses of war, who bring dark humor and challenge both the protagonist and audience to confront their complicity in historical violence.

Has humanity learned anything 30 years later?

A Brechtian exploration of the human cost of silence, The Flowers of Srebrenica amplifies voices often marginalized in historical narratives, while asking: If stories go untold, what is the toll?  Can remembering be an act of resistance?
